Last night, after a long week of fighting a cold and slogging through an even tougher work week, my tired cortex needed something more soothing than just tea and honey. After staring blankly at the stack of new cd’s sitting on desk, I closed my eyes and picked one from the middle of the stack. It was a blind draw that only my brain could have pulled off. “Faces In The Rocks” by Mariee Sioux got its debut and the sweet folds of folk sounds made me smile. The sounds Mariee Sioux produces are magical.

As you will hear, Mariee’s voice is delicate, yet by combining the lips of Gentle Thunder on his native america flute, it becomes spiritual. I was captivated by the sounds I was hearing. Even though it was not something I would sit down and listen to everyday, it was perfect for where my needs were at the time. I needed sleep. I needed rest. I needed to release the world and slip into a place where stress was an unknown concept.

Songs like, “Wizard Flurry Home”, brought images of sitting in some far off desert about 10 minutes after eating peyote (not that I have partaken but can imagine based on a little light Jim Morrison reading) sitting cross legged and wearing nothing by animal pelts to stay warm. Her tones lightly touch your insides and hold you like your mother used to as she told you bedtime stories. She will make you feel warm and safe. I like that in a person.

I know, I know. I am getting all soft on you. Don’t worry. I have a few other things up my sleeve that will “bring that shit back” soon enough.
