In 1995, filmaker Ondi Timoner set out to make a documentary on what she thought was a revolution in the music industry being led by two bands-The Brian Jonestown Massacre and The Dandy Warhols. Shot over 7 years and culled from over 2000 hours of footage, DIG!, becomes less about a musical revolution and more of a “portrait of a madman”, as Jonestown’s unstable frontman Anton Newcombe becomes the focal point of the movie. The footage gets narrowed down to show his drug influenced self-destruction and sad demise of his band as Anton destroys every oppurtunity for financial success in his quest for music industry credibility. There are at least a dozen moments in this film that rival anything in ‘This Is Spinal Tap’. Trust us, this is the best rock ‘n’ roll-documentary you’ll ever see. It has received critical acclaim by just about every major publication in the country including Newsweek, Rolling Stone, and The N.Y. Times. It was the winner of The Grand Jury Prize as the top film at the Sundance Film Festival. Available now as a 2-DVD Special Edition, the akaraff crew highly recommend this movie as a must see! Much thanks to Shermadelic for showing us the way on this one.
