I live in Arlington, MA, which is a stone’s throw from downtown Boston. I am also an avid golfer. Unfortunately those two things don’t really snuggle up to one another. In order for me to find a “nice” (yes…I am a bit of a golf course snob) course to play I have to drive at least 30 to 40 minutes. When one is a golf addict a 40 minute drive is nothing. That explains why my ass was up at 4:45am this lovely Sunday morning. I had a tee-time in Maine at 6:40am. Yup that’s right…Maine. Trust me, it is always worth the pain of waking up when it is nearly light out if you have a round of golf waiting for you.

So what course got me to drive 1.5 hours north on 95 at that ungodly hour? The Links at Outlook in South Berwick, Maine. This was my first excursion to this track and it did not disappoint. If you like links style courses then you will love this one. Unlike most courses around here, where penalties tend to come from woods and water hazards, Outlook seems to pride itself in it’s rough. Long and scraggly like the back of a wet sheepdog, this over grown turf turned a wide open set of holes into a tight track that forced you to pay attention and avoid spraying your shots. With it’s fast greens and Maine-esque elevation drops, Outlook offers even the season player a challenge.

I highly recommend the drive if you have the time. The pace of play was great and of course the people were friendly…seriously..people from Maine have to be right behind the folks from Minnesota when it comes to friendliness. It certainly help to make this sleepy hacker happy that he made the trek.

Enjoy.
